Wescom Credit Union | Building Better Lives for Southern Californians

What You Need to Know About Impersonation Scams

Account security is a top priority at Wescom.

While technology has made our lives more convenient, it has also given bad actors more ways to target members. For example, fraudsters are using spoofing technology to impersonate Wescom phone numbers and act as a Credit Union employee with the goal of acquiring account passwords, PINs, and one-time access codes. But even as criminals adopt new methods of tricking their targets into releasing sensitive information, Wescom remains committed to keeping member accounts safe through diligent security practices and member education.

3 Ways to Avoid a Credit Union Impersonation Scam

What You Need to Know About Impersonation Scams | Wescom Credit Union

Fraudsters use phone calls, text messages, and emails to contact members under false pretenses. While impersonating a Wescom employee, crooks claim they need to verify recent account charges or other transactions. Use these tips to keep personal information and financial data out of the hands of thieves.

  1. Do not provide personal account access information to anyone. Don’t automatically assume caller ID is correct. Scammers can spoof the phone number, so caller ID shows the name and phone number of the credit union. Do not provide information in response to a call or text message you were not expecting. Instead, hang up and call your credit union back using a verified phone number.
  2. Never send money to resolve account issues. Bad actors often scare members with phony text alerts related to debit card fraud. Scammers convince victims that the only way to resolve the issue, avoid hefty overdraft fees, and account closure is to wire money immediately.
  3. Report unexpected access code requests. If you receive a one-time access code via text or email that you did not request, do not use or share it with anyone. Doing so could give a fraudster access to your accounts. Alert your financial institution.

Remember, Wescom will NEVER call or text you to ask for passwords, authentication codes, PINs, or other account information. If you’re contacted or anything seems suspicious—even if the caller ID says Wescom—hang up and call us at 1-888-4WESCOM (1-888-493-7266) or report any su spicious activity by visiting wescom.org/security-center.
