Skimming happens when devices are illegally installed on card readers at ATMs or other payment terminals such as gas station pumps. Fraudsters can collect card data from the illegal device when a credit or debit card is swiped or inserted and use it steal form victims' accounts. According to fbi.gov, it is estimated that skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year.
