Stay Safe During the Holidays
Tips to help you stay safe when using ATMs and while holiday shopping
The holiday season is filled with the hustle and bustle of shopping and getting ready for a special time to celebrate with one another. During this joyous season, we want our communities to stay safe. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while using ATMs and during your holiday shopping.
If you’re using an ATM:
- Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. Try to use the ATM during daylight hours. If that is not possible, be sure you are using an ATM that is well-lit and visible from the street.
- Try to minimize the time spent at the ATM. You can do this by knowing what transactions you need to make before getting to the machine, memorizing your PIN (do not have it written down), and having your card easily accessible.
- If the card reader at the ATM looks like it may have been tampered with, do not use the ATM. Scammers can attach card skimming devices to card readers. These skimming devices can collect card information and PINs when a credit or debit card is swiped.
- Cover the keypad when entering your PIN so anyone waiting behind you in line will be unable to see the number you enter.
- Make sure to always take your receipts or transaction records with you.
- When using a drive-up ATM, keep your engine running and doors locked.
- After leaving the ATM put your credit or debit card and cash away immediately. Never count cash while at the ATM or in a public area. Wait until you’re in your car or any other secure location.
- If you believe you are being followed after making an ATM transaction, go to a well-lit, crowded area and call the police. If you’re driving and being followed, do not head to your home; drive to the nearest police station.
If you’re out holiday shopping:
- Park in a well-lit area and be sure to grab your keys before going to your car so you’re not distracted in the parking lot.
- Always lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of view or in your trunk.
- Be aware of your surroundings and avoid being distracted by your phone.
- If you’re in a crowded area, try to maintain your distance from others.
- If you carry a wallet, keep it in the front pocket. If you have a purse, keep it front of you or wear it across your body.
- If you take young children with you, teach them to go to a police officer, a store security guard, or a store employee if they get separated or lost.
- If you see something strange, call the police non-emergency number at 1-800-TELL-CHP (1-800-835-5247). In an emergency, always dial 9-1-1.
