Shoulder Surfing Scams

We often associate financial scams with online activity. But not all criminals looking to empty your bank account sit behind a keyboard. Bad actors also exist in the physical world, using shoulder scams to target unsuspecting victims in everyday interactions.

How Shoulder Scams Work

Daily, physical interactions provide data thieves endless opportunities to empty your bank account. Scammers use a deceptively simple technique called "shoulder surfing" to observe their target entering their PIN at an ATM, public kiosk, or while completing a purchase transaction at the register.

After the transaction, one fraudster approaches the target in the parking lot, claiming they dropped a $20 bill or another denomination. While the target is distracted by the phony Good Samaritan “returning” the money, a second fraudster steals their debit card. With both the card and PIN, the fraudsters can access and drain the victim's bank account.

Four Ways to Avoid a Shoulder Surfing Scam

  1. Physically block sensitive data from prying eyes. No matter where you are, cover the screen or keypad with your free hand or another object when entering your PIN or other private information.
  2. Stay alert to your surroundings. Scammers are looking for targets who appear preoccupied. Avoid using your cell phone when walking back to your vehicle.
  3. Only use ATMs located in secure areas. Complete ATM transactions inside a bank or credit union where suspicious activity is closely monitored.
  4. Monitor financial accounts. Regularly review posted transactions so you can quickly alert your financial institution of unauthorized purchases or withdrawals.
