Know How to Spot a Scam
Three Signs It's Fraud
Would you be able to spot a scam in an email, text message, social media, or in a phone call? Some signs could be obvious, but fraudsters are finding new, creative ways to commit fraud and trick you into giving them your information. Here are three signs your being scammed:
- You're encouraged to act right away. Scammers want you to take action (i.e. share you information, click on a link, update your password, etc.) before you have time to think. They might even pretend to be a Wescom representative, family member or friend, or a support or service representative.
- They ask for your personal info. Know that Wescom will never call, text, or email you to request passwords, your account number, debit card number, credit card number, PINs, full Social Security number, online banking credentials, or any one-time verification codes — even if the caller or sender says (or looks like) they're from Wescom. If you receive a call from a phone number that looks like it's from Wescom and are unsure of the identity of a person claiming to be a Wescom representative, hang up and call us back at 1-888-4WESCOM (1-888-493-7266).
- There's a request to pay. Be cautious if you're asked to pay through a wire transfer or digital payment app, such as Zelle®. Only use Zelle® to send and receive money from people you know and trust.
