In April 2020, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara ordered insurance companies to return insurance premiums to consumers and businesses.¹

“With Californians driving fewer miles and many businesses closed due to the COVID-19 emergency, consumers need relief from premiums that no longer reflect their present-day risk of accident or loss,” said Commissioner Lara.

The Insurance Information Institute reported that many major auto insurance companies have announced refunds, discounts, dividends, and credits for customers reporting lower mileage totaling $8.1 billion – and growing.² But since some of these companies are not proactively crediting their customers, policyholders have to take the wheel and call to get their refund or rate discount – and potentially reduce costs.
