How to Spot a Skimming Device
Keep Your Card Information Safe
Scammers can attach card-skimming devices to card readers at ATMs or other payment terminals such as gas station pumps. These skimming devices can collect card information and PINs when a credit or debit card is swiped or inserted.
Always check an ATM or card reader before inserting your card. Here are some tips to help protect your card information, according to fbi.gov.
- Choose a fuel pump that is closer to the store and in direct view of the attendant. These pumps are less likely to be targets for skimmers.
- Protect your PIN by running your debit card as a credit card or covering the keypad when you enter your PIN.
- Whenever possible, pay inside with the attendant or tap your card to pay if you see the contactless logo.
- Look for anything loose, crooked, damaged, or scratched. Don't use any card reader if you notice anything unusual.
- Pull at the edges of the keypad before entering your PIN to check for the skimming device.
- Use ATMs in well-lit locations.
- Be alert for skimming devices in tourist areas, which are popular targets.
