How to Know If a Text Is Legit or Fraud | Wescom Credit Union

The smarter technology gets, the smarter fraudsters get. They’re finding new and more creative ways to steal your money by sending fake text messages claiming to be a shipping company or even a Wescom representative. Even if you’re expecting a package or the sender says (or looks like) they're from Wescom, keep in mind the following three signs that a text message or call is a scam:

  1. You’re asked to share information. Know that shipping companies and Wescom will never call or text you to request passwords, your account number, debit card number, credit card number, PINs, full Social Security number, online banking credentials, or any one-time verification codes.
  2. There are misspelled words or incorrect phone numbers in the message.
  3. There's a request to pay. Be cautious if you're asked to pay through a wire transfer or digital payment app, such as Zelle®. Only use Zelle® to send and receive money from people you know and trust.

If you receive a call from a phone number that looks like it's from Wescom and are unsure of the identity of a person claiming to be a Wescom representative, hang up and call us back at 1-888-4WESCOM (1-888-493-7266). We also encourage you to sign up for Wescom's free Account Alerts to notify you via text or email about activity on your account.* To report unknown activity or fraud or learn more about fraud scams and what you can do to help protect yourself, visit wescom.org/security-center or call us at 1-888-4WESCOM (1-888-493-7266).
