Contactless Cards Surge Amid Pandemic | Wescom Credit Union

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early March, regularly sanitizing high-touch surfaces has become the norm – and contactless payments, especially contactless cards, have become the preferred way to pay.

The Financial Brand, a digital publication focused on bank and credit union issues, reported on a study released in August 2020 by National Retail Federation and Forrester that demonstrates the increase in contactless payments.

Concerning retailers, the survey found that 58 percent accept contactless cards, up from 40% in 2019. Concerning consumers, the survey found that one in five have made a contactless payment for the first time during the pandemic. Of those consumers, 57 percent said they would continue using contactless payments post-pandemic.

It’s a shift in transaction behavior – and it’s here to stay.
