7 Ways to Keep Your Kid's Account Safe | Wescom Credit Union

So you opened a Wescom Youth Banking Account for your kid — that's great! You're helping them learn smart money habits, which will help them become financially responsible as they get older. But with the added responsibility of a new account, comes added risk for fraud. In addition to the security measures that Wescom already takes to keep all members' accounts safe, here are seven ways to help keep your kid's account safe.

  1. Set up Account Alerts to be notified of transactions and changes in balance.
  2. Control all cards from the Card Center through online or mobile banking. Here you can temporarily block/unblock cards, decrease your ATM cash withdrawal limit, replace a damaged card, report a card as lost or stolen, or set up a travel notice if you'll be going out of town.
  3. Youth Banking Plus Account holders can use Zelle® to send up to $500 daily and receive money from friends and family in the mobile app.
  4. Make sure their password is unique — just like them! Try not to use one universal password — this makes it too easy for fraudsters.
  5. Use safe ATMs — like Wescom ATMs — in well-lit places. Fraud devices or “skimmers” at ATMs can also be sources of fraud so it's important to inspect the ATM's card reader before using it.
  6. Add the card to their mobile wallet for safe and secure payments in the Wescom Mobile Banking App — if they have a phone — so they only have to keep track of one item.
  7. Make sure your child knows that they should never share their confidential account information with anyone — such as their online banking username and password — especially through social media.
